What Is NAHU's Education Foundation? In 1992, the National Association of Health Underwriters' Board of Trustees authorized the creation of a Foundation for the Promotion of Consumer Health Education. The Foundation was charged with educating the public on current health care issues. Since that time, the Foundation has undertaken the following initiatives:
  • Annual Specialty Insurance Conferences
  • Disaster Relief Grants for industry individuals affected by 9/11
  • Gramm-Leach Bliley Act Handbook providing information on privacy law
  • Wetzel Scholarship Fund for individuals seeking higher education in the insurance industry
In 1997, the Foundation officially changed its name to the NAHU Education Foundation to formalize the renewed focus on educating consumers, government agencies and industry professionals on issues related to health insurance.

Our most current initiatives include:
  • Consumer guides that explain various types of healthcare coverage in layman's terms
  • A Healthy Access database to help consumers and policy makers find information about public and private health insurance options in all 50 states
  • Consumer Brochures on Health Insurance including:
    • What You Need to Know About Medicare - a must for any agents and brokers who sell Medicare products. The brochure outlines Medicare benefits and answers questions regarding Medicare eligibility and costs
    • Consumer Guide to Health Insurance - addresses topics from "What is health insurance?" and "How does health insurance work?"
    • Wellness Programs - offers facts supporting how healthy employees can benefit the business and lower overall health care costs
  • Legal analysis on Connector and Exchange proposals
  • "Speaking of Books" audiocasts that interview relevant industry authors on issues of the day
  • Spanish language materials to explain the need for health insurance
  • Brochure and Outreach Campaign - What to do when you turn 65?
  • Media Outreach Campaign - What to do if you lose your job?
Our strategy continues to focus on identifying and promoting messages consistent with the mission and vision of the organization. The debate about the U.S. health care system continues and the need to educate both consumers and policymakers has never been greater. The Foundation serves as a direct source of information for all parties concerned about health care, health insurance, and options for consumers.
